Joseph R. Auriemma, Jr. (INCI, CFI)
Joseph Auriemma, Jr., INCI, CFI, brings more than twenty-four years of distinguished experience with the New York State Police, where he retired as a Senior Investigator. In this leadership role, Joseph supervised all criminal investigations conducted by a team of five Investigators and twenty-five uniformed Troopers, overseeing casework that ranged from complex felonies to high-stakes internal inquiries.

Throughout his career, Joseph built a reputation for professionalism, thoroughness, and innovative thinking. He served as both a uniformed Trooper and a plainclothes Investigator, developing expertise across multiple investigative disciplines. For six years, he was assigned to the Major Crimes Unit, where he led investigations into homicides, suspicious deaths, and other serious criminal offenses. His work often involved highly sensitive matters, including compelled investigations of public officials and fellow law enforcement officers. This experience informs his commitment to impartiality and evidence-based practices in all aspects of his current work.
During his tenure, Joseph also spent two years at a Child Advocacy Center conducting investigations into crimes against children, demonstrating his skill and care in working with vulnerable populations and complex, emotionally charged cases. Over seventeen years within the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, he conducted thousands of interviews and interrogations, contributing directly to successful prosecutions and the advancement of investigative methodologies.
In addition to operational leadership, Joseph played a pivotal role in shaping investigative practices statewide. As one of two Regional Coordinators of the New York State Police Polygraph Unit, he supervised thirty-nine examiners and developed enhancements to the criminal and pre-employment polygraph framework, including the implementation of a comprehensive quality control program. He has been a certified polygraph examiner since 2015.
Joseph’s impact extended beyond the field. As the lead instructor for Investigative Interviewing at the New York State Police Academy, he trained countless members in evidence-based communication, crisis negotiation, and both basic and advanced search warrant practices. His instructional contributions continued at the New York State Preparedness Training Center, where he developed and delivered courses on Investigative Interviewing, Cellular Phone Analysis, Crisis Negotiation, and Search Warrant Execution.
Among his professional achievements, one stands out for its lasting influence on law enforcement worldwide. During a complex homicide investigation, Joseph identified a critical gap in available digital evidence, an insight that led directly to the development of the Tombstone Report from Google. This tool has since become an indispensable resource for law enforcement agencies across the globe, exemplifying Joseph’s commitment to innovation in the pursuit of justice.
Recognized for his dedication to excellence in training and education, Joseph received the George M. Searle Memorial Award in May 2019. This honor is presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves in advancing the mission of the New York State Police through impactful instruction and leadership.
Throughout his career, Joseph authored over 2,500 search warrants and court orders, a testament to his meticulous approach and mastery of investigative law. His work reflects a philosophy that effective investigations require both rigorous factual inquiry and a commitment to ethical, professional conduct.
Today, Joseph draws on this depth of experience to deliver a full range of professional services to law enforcement agencies, government entities, and private organizations. He conducts independent internal investigations into allegations of misconduct, policy violations, and ethical breaches with the same impartiality and precision that defined his career in public service. He also designs and delivers research-based training programs on investigative interviewing, field interviewing strategies, search warrant writing, and crisis communication. Additionally, Joseph presents at conferences and seminars on complex cases such as the Brandyn Foster homicide, sharing insights into the integration of digital evidence, advanced interviewing techniques, and multidisciplinary investigative approaches.
Joseph holds certifications as a Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI) and an International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) Nationally Certified Instructor (INCI). He is also certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as an Instructor for Police Topics.
Whether conducting a sensitive internal review, instructing the next generation of investigators, or consulting on best practices for complex cases, Joseph’s work is guided by a commitment to integrity, professionalism, and the advancement of evidence-based investigative standards.
